Dr. Colin McMillan
Investing in Medical Equipment
“I have really noticed the acuity of our patients growing more prominent. The medical profession is growing more and more reliant on diagnostic tools such as ultrasound, CT and MRI that were really
in their infancy stage 25 years ago. Having these kinds of tools available now means that we’re able
to diagnose and treat patients requiring cardiac care or those with neurological issues. We used to have
to send them off the Island. We’ve definitely made strides but we have miles to go. One of our biggest challenges is the diagnosis and management of congestive heart failure.”
Dr. Colin McMillan, QEH Internal Medicine and Cardiology,
President of the Canadian Medical Association (Sept. 06 – 07) and QEH’s first Chief of Medicine
Frank Ledwell
In 2005, Frank Ledwell spoke about his care at the QEH and said, “Since being diagnosed with colon cancer, in early October, I had gone under the hospital’s 15-year-old CAT scan three times.” He said the new CAT scan will be a major breakthrough for cancer treatment in the province and for other diagnoses as well.
In the more recent past, Frank has become all too familiar with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. “That first week of July 2007, our second grandchild, a boy, was born at the QEH and at the same time, his grandfather (me) landed in ICU with a heart problem. I am grateful to specialists, Dr. Hunt, Dr. Shetty and the wonderful nursing teams for getting me through a serious trauma.
It is expensive to run the QEH and to acquire new and replacement equipment. Nothing on PEI is more worthy of financial support from all Islanders.”
